Experience Unforgettable Fall Hunting As An Owner at Rough Creek Lodge

For today’s article, we interviewed Rough Creek Lodge’s Recreation Director Tanner Morgan to get the scoop on the fall hunting season at Rough Creek.

Every season at Rough Creek is special in its own way, but for hunters, it’s go-time for adventure out here.

Whether it’s your first time or you’re an experienced hunter, owners at Rough Creek love that the resort provides ample opportunities to bond while pursuing upland birds, deer, and duck.

Ready to make some memories? With abundant wildlife and (hopefully!) crisp air, the autumn season transforms the foothills of the Texas Hill Country into a breathtaking backdrop for exciting hunts. In addition to creating cherished moments, these hunting experiences offer meaningful opportunities for family bonding and personal growth.

Q: What makes fall such a special time for hunting at the resort, and what types of game are most popular during this season?

“Fall is what we work for all summer long!” said Morgan. “All of our hunting seasons are opening up starting with upland birds and archery whitetail in early October, quickly followed up by the rifle deer season and duck season in early November! Of course, we hunt hogs all year but it’s especially great in the fall.”

Q: How does the fall weather in North Texas affect the hunting experience and the behavior of the game?

“The first fall cold (or cool) front gives all the guides the itch to get into the field! We really notice the buck breaking out of their summer bachelor groups, and we start to see flights of ducks moving south,” continued Morgan.

“Plus, the cool weather really gets both the seasoned and rookie bird dogs fired up! The upland birds are plentiful and the dogs are always ready once those morning temps drop into the 50’s.”

Q: How do you guide experienced hunters versus beginners during the fall season?

“We love hunting with seasoned hunters,” said Morgan. “They offer us the ability to relax…to a degree. But mostly we like experienced regulars because it allows us to challenge them – and ourselves – with new things, like trying a new dog, testing out a new hunting location, or even just letting them try a new shotgun they purchased in the offseason.

“However, there is nothing like the smile, enjoyment, and excitement that comes with helping a new hunter shoot their first bird, deer, or hog. Honestly, it’s why we do what we do. Sure, we have to be more careful when setting up the hunt, and deciding where to go or what dogs to run, and the hunt typically moves at a slower pace, but it’s all worth it in the end.”

Q: What gear or equipment do you recommend for a successful fall hunt in this region?

“As someone who makes a living working in the outdoors, I can tell you with 100% certainty that if you don’t have a good pair of boots, you’re going to be miserable,” cautioned Morgan. “After that you will need some good gear for all the different weather you will encounter, like some rain gear, insulated clothes, and something to break the wind. I’m personally partial to SITKA gear, but find what works best for you to keep you comfortable.”

Q: After a day of hunting, what post-hunt activities or dining options would you recommend to help guests unwind and enjoy the fall season?

“My favorite thing to do is to grab a drink and hang out by the firepit to relive the exciting moments of the hunt or past hunts with my friends,” said Morgan. “But nothing can cap off a great day in the field like sitting down to a good hearty meal! Chef Thompson knows just how to hit the spot when you are starving after a long day of hunting.”
